Where: ms is the mass, in grams, of the sample; m1 is the mass, in grams, of immersion liquid required to fill empty pycnometer; m2 is the mass, in grams of immersion liquid added to fill pycnometer containing the sample; d (IL) is the denisty of the immersion liquid (as determined by equation 2).
