EU Methods A.12. – The flammability of the test item in contact with water and the pyrophoric properties of the test item were determined using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.12. Flammability (Contact with Water) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Increasing quantities of test item were brought in to contact with water in a prescribed and stepwise manner.  Following each introduction of test item and water, it was noted whether (i) any gas was evolved and (ii) if ignition of the gas occurred.

The test item did not emit any gas in contact with water.

The test was performed at ambient temperature six times.  If no ignition a fresh aliquot (approximately 5 ml) was added to an indented filter paper.  It was observed whether ignition or charring of the filter paper occurred within five minutes of the liquid being added. The test was performed at ambient temperature three times unless ignition or charring occurred.

The test item did not ignite when exposed air when in contact with either kieselguhr or filter paper.

The test item cannot be categorised in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Classification Labelling and Packaging) of 16 December 2008.

Justification for classification or non-classification


The flammability classification of liquid test items is determined on the basis of flash point in accordance with the criteria defined in Section 2.6.2., Annex II of Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008. As the test item has a flash point > 60 oC, it does not meet the classification criteria for classification as a flammable liquid.


 


Further, the test item was subject to further testing in accordance with test guideline methods EU A.12. and EU A.13.. The test item does not emit any flammable gas when brought in to contact with water or ignite when brought in to contact with air.
