Description of key information

Calcium ions are essential for micro-organisms in activated sewage sludge and for microbial processes. Calcium is a cellular cation, cofactor for certain enzymes and a component of endospores. Calcium is therefore added to the synthetic sewage feed at a concentration of 109 mg calcium/L according to the “activated sludge respiration inhibition test (Carbon and Ammonium Oxidation)” (OECD TG 209, 2010). Besides that, calcium, e.g. as hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), is intentionally used in sewage treatment plants to control the acid capacity (http://www.klaerwerk.info/Abwasserreinigung/Saeurekapazitaet-auf-Klaeranlagen--ein-Wieso---Warum--Thema-35286. Thus, the EC50 for respiration inhibition of activated sewage sludge can at least be expected to be > 100 mg Ca/L.
