Description of key information
Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt consists of a cerium cation and a benzenesulfonic acid (4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivate) anion. In the assessment of the aquatic toxicity of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt to algae and invertebrates, read-across to the assessment entities soluble cerium substances and benzenesulfonic acid (4-C10-13-sec-alkyl) anions is applied since the ions of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt determine its fate and toxicity in the environment.
Cerium
Reliable acute aquatic toxicity data of cerium ions are available for two trophic levels, algae and invertebrates:
- a 72-h EC50 of 0.63 mg Ce/L was identified for the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
- a 48-h EC50 of 6.9 mg Ce/L was identified for the invertebrate Daphnia magna
Reliable chronic aquatic toxicity data of cerium ions are available for algae:
- a 72-h NOEC of 0.46 mg Ce/L was identified for the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata
In sum, cerium ions have some potential for acute and long-term aquatic toxicity.
benzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives
Acute data are available for two trophic levels, algae and invertebrates
- a 72-h EC50 of 48 mg/L was identified for the green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus. In addition, a 72-h EC50 of 235 mg/L is available for the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata
- a 48-h EC50 of 2.9 mg/L was identified for the invertebrate species Daphnia magna.
Chronic aquatic toxicity data of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives are available for algae:
- a 72-h NOEC of 18 mg/L (nominal) was identified for the green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus
- a 72-h ECr10 of 13.1 mg/L (nominal) was identified for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata
In sum, benzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives have a low potential for acute aquatic toxicity but not for chronic.
benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt
Aquatic toxicity studies with benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt are not available. Thus aquatic toxicity is addressed with existing data on the dissociation products. The assessment is based on the most toxic moiety, i.e. cerium cations for the trophic level of algae and aquatic plants but anions of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives for the trophic level of aquatic invertebrates. Existing aquatic toxicity data of the dissociation products are therefore recalculated for benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt based on a maximum cerium content of 59.5 % and a maximum content of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives of 51 %.
- a 72-h EC50 of 1.06 mg/L was identified for the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
- a 48-h EC50 of 5.69 mg /L was identified for the invertebrate species Daphnia magna
Reliable chronic aquatic toxicity data are available for algae:
- a 72-h NOEC of 0.77 mg/L was identified for the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata
In sum, benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt has some potential for acute and long-term aquatic toxicity.
