Executive summary:

A study was conducted to determine the flammability of the test substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, N,N,N'-tris(hydroxyethyl)-N,N'-dimethyl-N'-tallow alkyltrimethylenedi-, bis(Me sulfates) (salts), according to the EU Method A.10 and UN Test Method N.1 as described in the UN Recommendations of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criterian part III, sub-section 33.2.1.4. The test substance was spread on the plate in the form of a rope 250 mm in length with a cross section of about 1 cm2. The pile was arranged at right angle to the draught in the fume cupboard and the wind screen was erected. The flame of the teclu burner (minimum diameter 5mm) was used to ignite the pile at one end. After ignition of the test substance the burning time was determined for 230mm instead of 200mm. Propagation of the combustion was less than 200 mm within four minutes. Therefore, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable, and no determination of burning rate was necessary. Under the study conditions, the substance was not classified as a readily combustible solid (Krebs, 2018).
