Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Testing for long-term toxicity to fish is not considered necessary because:

·        The substance reacts violently with water therefore ecotoxicity testing would be too hazardous.

Short-term toxicity of the degradation products to fish is low based on reliable read across.

·        The substance hydrolyses rapidly to hydrogen chloride and monosilicic acid, Si(OH)4, and amorphous polysilicic acid. The effects of hydrogen chloride are limited to pH effects and not relevant in correctly buffered media. Monosilicic acid is a naturally-occurring substance which is not harmful to aquatic organisms at relevant concentrations. Monosilicic acid is the major bioavailable form of silica for aquatic organisms and plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of silicon (Si).
