Description of key information

The toxicity of the test substance to microorganisms was investigated by the conduction of an inhibition control in the framework of a ready biodegradability study (OECD 301F, BASF AG 486504, 1986). The domestic, activated sludge used as inoculum showed no significant inhibition of its degradation potential after a test duration of 28 days at a test substance concentration of 100 mg/L. This value is therefore selected as a NOEC for chemical safety assessment.

This result is supported by the outcome of a guideline study similar to OECD 209 (ISO 8192) for which only a summary is available. In this study an EC50 (30 min) > 100 mg/L was determined (BASF AG 1363, 1986). Based on these data, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
