Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Determination of the surface tension (mN/m) was carried out by the du Noüy ring method. It is a method for measuring the surface tension of a liquid and the interfacial tension between two liquids.
The force referred to the wetted length acting on a ring as a result of the tension of the withdrawn liquid lamella when moving the ring from one phase to another is measured in this method.

Results and discussion

Surface tension
Key result
Surface tension:
>= 28.3 - <= 29.3 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
100 mg/L
Remarks on result:
other: arithmetic mean of 20 determinations

Any other information on results incl. tables

- Ring: circumference = 60 mm; radius = ~9,55 mm

- Calibration: A calibration using pure water was performed. The surface tension of pure water was 72,8 mN/m at this.

- Correction factor: It was not necessary to apply a correction factor because the surface tension of pure water was not different from 72,8 mN/m. According to the manual a correction factor should be only applied, if there is a differenece.

- Time dependence of the measured surface tension after transferring the solution to the measurement vessel: The solution of measurement vessel was allowed to equilibrate at 25˚C for 5 min.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
- surface tension: 28.8 +/- 0.5 mN/m
- surface tension lower than 60 mN/m: the substance should be regarded as surface-active material
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test material was determined using the du Noüy ring method on the force tensiometer K6 (by Krüss GmbH): 28.8 +/- 0.5 mN/m at 20°C (arithmetic mean of 20 determinations).

The test material is considered to be a surface-active material by definition of EU-Method A.5 (since the value is less than 60 mN/m).
