Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
22 September 2009
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
No. L383 December 1992
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Other quality assurance:
other: Chemikaliengesetz ('Chemicals Act') der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (ChemG), Anhang 1 ('Annex 1'), 2008 and Directive 2004/10/EC of 11 February 2004 (Official Journal No. L 50/44)
Test procedure:
other: buring time over 200 mm
Burning time:
>= 4 min

The test item ignited and burned along the powder train in more than 4 minutes in the preliminary test. Due to this the test item was not classified as a flammable solid and no further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item was determined not to be flammable as although the test item ignited and burned it took more than 4 minutes to burn 200 mm along the powder train in the preliminary test. Due to this the test item was not classified as a flammable solid and no further testing was required.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test item was determined in a EC A.10 guideline study. In the preliminary test the test item was grinded and formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a cool, impervious, low heat-conduction base plate, across the draught of a fume hood. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train for 2 minutes. It was noted whether combustion was propagated along 200 mm of the train within the 4 minute test period. The test item ignited and burned along the train in more than 4 minutes in the preliminary test. Due to this the test item was not classified as a flammable solid and no further testing was required.

The study is a GLP compliant guideline experimental study, suitable for assessing this endpoint without restrictions.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
21 March 2018 to 12 April 2018
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
other: The test item was observed to melt, then ignite and burn at point of contact with the burner flame. The flame propagated along a 60 mm length of the train in a total of 6 minutes and 15 seconds.
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item was found to be not highly flammable.

Executive summary:

The flammability of the test item was investigated in an EC Method A.10 study. The test item was observed to melt, then ignite and burn at point of contact with the burner flame. The flame propagated along a 60 mm length of the train in a total of 6 minutes and 15 seconds. The test item was not highly flammable.

The study is a GLP compliant, guideline experimental study and is fully acceptable for assessment of this endpoint.

Description of key information

In the preliminary tests, the test item ignited and burned along the train in more than 4 minutes. Due to this the test item was not classified as a flammable solid and no further testing was required.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability of the test item was determined in GLP compliant EC A.10 guideline studies (Fieseler 2009d and Dunnoing 2018). Based on the results of these preliminary tests a definitive test was not required to be conducted as the test items ignited and burned along the train in more than 4 minutes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In the preliminary tests, the test item ignited and burned along the train in more than 4 minutes. Due to this the test item was not classified as a flammable solid and no further testing was required.
