Description of key information

Tartaric acid and its salts have density values higher than 1.6 g/mL.

The determination of this property was done according to a weight of evidence approach based on available literature reference and QSAR calculation.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A collection of the density values was performed for tartaric acid and its salts (i.e. monosodium, monopotassium, sodium potassium, sodium, potassium and calcium tartrate). All found values are listed below.

EC name

Density (g/mL)

(+)-tartaric acid

1.76

(-)-tartaric acid

1.76

(±)-tartaric acid

1.79

 mesotartaric acid

1.67

 potassium hydrogen tartrate

1.98

 potassium sodium tartrate

1.79

 calcium tartrate

1.88

 sodium hydrogen tartrate

-

 disodium tartrate

1.78 - 1.82

 dipotassium tartrate

1.98

The density values are available for tartaric acid and almost all its salts. Overall, all these values are very similar and, on the whole, are higher than 1.6 g/mL.
