Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
relative density
Type of information:
read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Justification for type of information:
All members of the category ‘Calcium salts of the oxyacids of boron (B)’ are formed in situ and are immediately formulated into grease thickeners which are marketed and used within the EU/EEA. Calcium metaborate is the only member to be commercially available in isolated form. All other members are not commercially available and therefore extraction from the grease thickener products would need to be performed for testing to be conducted on the isolated substance itself. As testing requires a substantial quantity of material, it was decided to perform the testing on the commercially available product, calcium metaborate for this category approach.

All of the substances in this category are inorganic calcium salts of boric acid and are solid at ambient temperature and are expected to have similar physiochemical properties. Any variations due to the range of trigonal and tetrahedral species between the substances are not expected to lead to any changes in the density. Read-across to the result for calcium metaborate is therefore proposed.

Type:

Density:
1 904 kg/m³
Temp.:
20 °C
Conclusions:
The density of calcium tetraborate should not vary considerably to the value obtained for calcium metaborate. The relative density of calcium tetraborate can therefore be quoted as 1.904.
Executive summary:

The density of calcium metaborate was determined using the pycnometer method according to EU Method A3. The relative density of the test item was determined to be 1.904. The sample density was determined to be 1904 kg/m3. The density of calcium tetraborate should not vary considerably to the value obtained for calcium metaborate.
