Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish

The short-term toxicity to fish of the test substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl chlorides, CAS Number 70750 -47 -9, EC Number 274-846-6, [Quaternary ammonium compounds, C12-18-alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 71808 -53 -2, EC Number 276 -038 -9], was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test).

This substance is considered to be close enough in structural integrity to the target substance, bis(2 -hydroxyethyl)oleylmethylammonium chloride, CAS Number 18448 -65 -2, EC Number 242 -332 -0, so as to justify valid read-across.

The LC50 (96 h) was calculated to be 2.40 mg/L with 98% confidence limits of 1.8 and 3.2 mg/L. The highest concentration causing no mortality (no observed effect concentration, NOEC) after 96 hours amounted to 1.8 mg/L, whereas 100% mortality was produced within 20 hours at 3.2 mg/L.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

The short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of the test substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl chlorides, CAS Number 70750 -47 -9, EC Number 274-846-6, [Quaternary ammonium compounds, C12-18-alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 71808 -53 -2, EC Number 276 -038 -9], was investigated in a 21 d-reproduction study conducted according to OECD guideline 211 (Daphnia Magna Reproduction Test) - the short-term toxicity (48h - EC50) being conseravtively derived.

This substance is considered to be close enough in structural integrity to the target substance, bis(2 -hydroxyethyl)oleylmethylammonium chloride, CAS Number 18448 -65 -2, EC Number 242 -332 -0, so as to justify valid read-across.

The survival after 21 days in the long-term toxicity study with Daphnia magna (according to OECD TG 211), 21d-EC50 was taken as a conservative estimate for the short-term toxicity to Daphnia magna (48h-EC50). Details of the study are recorded under the section for long-term toxicity. The EC50 was 468 ug/l, with 95%-confidence limits 270 - 810 ug/L.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

.............................................waiting on algal study from Hydrotox...............................................................

In a supporting study the toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria of the test substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl chlorides, CAS Number 70750 -47 -9, EC Number 274-846-6, [Quaternary ammonium compounds, C12-18-alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 71808 -53 -2, EC Number 276 -038 -9], was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test).

This substance is considered to be close enough in structural integrity to the target substance, bis(2 -hydroxyethyl)oleylmethylammonium chloride, CAS Number 18448 -65 -2, EC Number 242 -332 -0, so as to justify valid read-across.

Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 70750-47-9, EC Number 274-846-6was found to inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga,Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata,after 72 h with the following effect values (nominal concentrations): The EC10-values with 95 % confidence intervals for inhibition of specific growth rate (ErC10) and yield (EyC10) after 72 h were 122 (101 – 141) and 39.7 (24.5 – 61.7) µg/L, respectively. The EC50-values with 95 % confidence intervals for inhibition of specific growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) after 72 h were 416 (363 – 470) and 132 (108 – 161) µg/L, respectively.

Toxicity to microorganisms

The toxicity to microorganisms of the test substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl chlorides, CAS Number 70750 -47 -9, EC Number 274-846-6, [Quaternary ammonium compounds, C12-18-alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 71808 -53 -2, EC Number 276 -038 -9], was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test).

This substance is considered to be close enough in structural integrity to the target substance, bis(2 -hydroxyethyl)oleylmethylammonium chloride, CAS Number 18448 -65 -2, EC Number 242 -332 -0, so as to justify valid read-across.

Under the conditions of the study the EC50 of the test item, Quaternary ammonium compounds, coco alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chlorides, CAS Number 70750-47-9, EC Number 274-846-6, for activated sludge after 3 hours contact time is 29 mg/L with 95% confidence limits of 15 and 56 mg/L. The EC10, EC20 and EC80 are 11, 15 and 55 mg/L, respectively
