Description of key information

Koc values have been determined for the five substances being registered at >10 tpa that fit within the MDI category definition by calculation using the equation detailed in Technical Guidance Document on Risk Assessment Part III (EC, 2003) and by QSAR. The Log Koc values for the structures associated with these three substances are in the range of 4.47 to 15.55.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

MDI substances only occur in a base oil grease and, in realistic use scenarios, the formulated greases are specifically designed to minimise leaching of the thickener. The isolated thickeners are estimated to have water solubilities of less than 0.01 mg/L, vapour pressures of less than 10 E-10 Pa and high log octanol-water partition coefficients. On the basis of the physical-chemical properties and bioaccessibility studies, MDI substances are expected to reside within the grease base oil matrix. As such, MDI substances are not expected to partition to water, soil or air and hence are not anticipated to be accessible in the environment.
