Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- water solubility
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: GLP-compliant study following a modified guideline, available as an unpublished report, reliable without restrictions
- Justification for type of information:
- A discussion and report on the read across strategy is given as an attachment in IUCLID Section 13.
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- read-across: supporting information
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility)
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- Deviations did not impact the scientific integrity of the study
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- As the test item is a UVCB, the flask method was considered the most suitable method, therefore a preliminary assessment was not conducted. Testing was carried out at loading rates of 1 and 10 g/L, in accordance with ECHA guidance on testing of complex substances. After equilibration samples contained excess test item and were therefore filtered. The remaining solution was then analysed, using total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, as this method has improved limits of detection / quantification compared to HPLC analysis.
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Type of method:
- flask method
- Key result
- Water solubility:
- <= 0.438 g/L
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- pH:
- 8.92 - 9
- Remarks on result:
- other: Measured as total organic carbon (TOC) at a loading rate of 1 g/L.
- Details on results:
- The result is expressed as total organic carbon (TOC). Although samples were prepared at two loading rates, 1 and 10 g/L, at the higher loading rate the samples emulsified to such an extent it was impossible for them to be cleaned up sufficiently for analysis. Water solubility has been measured at a loading rate of 1 g/L, however a small amount of excess test material was still present. This means that the result is likely to be an overestimate and is therefore reported as a limit value.
- Conclusions:
- Interpretation of results: other: The test item is a complex UVCB with components of low or varying water solubilities. As solubility results are expressed as total organic carbon they cannot be directly compared against the solubility categories.
The solubility of rosin, polymer with formaldehyde, potassium salts was measured at a loading rate of 1 g/L, and the result expressed as total organic carbon (TOC). At a loading rate of 10 g/L the sample emulsified and could not be analysed. At a loading rate of 1 g/L TOC was reported as ≤0.438 g/L. - Executive summary:
This is a GLP-compliant study following a modified guideline and is considered to be suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint.

Description of key information
There is no data available for Resin acids and rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, sodium salts. However, data available from a structural analogue Resin acids and rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, potassium salts is used as read across.
The water solubility of Rosin, Hydrogenated rosin, Rosin, reaction products with formaldehyde and Rosin oligomers ranges from 0.9
mg/L to 8.1 mg/L. The water solubility of monovalent salts ranges from ≤438 mg/L to mutually miscible. The water solubility of divalent salts ranges from 18.2 - 65 mg/L.
The water solubility of Resin acids and rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, potassium salts, measured as TOC at a loading rate of 1g/L is <= 438 mg/L at pH 8.83 - 9.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
There is no data available for Resin acids and rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, sodium salts. However, data available from a structural analogue Resin acids and rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, potassium salts is used as read across.
A GLP-compliant study, conducted according to OECD Guideline 105 (flask method), was provided for Resin acids and Rosin acids, reaction products with formaldehyde, potassium salt (Harlan Laboratories Ltd., 2012a)
