Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on read across studies for short term toxicity to fish on chemically similar substances the LC50(fish, 96h) for the target substance Fatty acids, C14 -18 and C16 -18 -unsatd., ammonium salts is estimated to be >=21 mg/l  (to <= 217mg/l).

Additional information

Several publication are available in which the acute toxicity to fish of the analogue substances (Sodium oleate, Sodium myristate, Sodium palmitate, Sodium stearate) were determined. Therefore,

after acclimatization red killifish (Oryzias latipes) were exposed to several concentrations of the read across substance. The test followed a semi-static procedure with an exposure time of 96 h. As results, the following LC50 values in freshwater were determined: 217 mg/L for sodium oleate, 118 mg/L for sodium myristate, 150 mg/L for sodium palmitate and 125mg/L for sodium stearate.

Additionally, an acute aquatic toxicity test was conducted on fish to assess the LC50 (96 h) of sodium myristate. The study was conducted in 2000 according to OECD guideline 203 and in compliance with GLP by the MOE (Ministry of the Environment in Japan). As a result, an LC50 of >21 mg/L was revealed.

Based on the structural similarity of the target substance to the analogue substances the results of the acute toxicity to fish of the source substances can be assigned to the target substance.

The supporting information of the short term toxicity to fish of the analogue substances: sodium oleate (LC50(fish, 96h): >100mg/l), sodium stearate (LC50(fish, 96h): >100mg/l) and sodium laurate (LC50(Oryzias latipes, 96h): 11mg/l) are stated below. But these information are less appropriate for the read-across projection to short term toxicity to fish of the target substance (laurate is only an impurity).
