Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with calcium dibenzoate are not available, thus aquatic toxicity will be addressed with existing data on the dissociation products.

Calcium: Calcium as an essential element has a very low potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.

Benzoic acid: Reliable aquatic toxicity data of benzoic acid are available from guideline studies for microorganisms. The lowest EC10 and EC50 values are estimated with ≥ 1000 mg/L and > 1000 mg/L, respectively. In sum, benzoic acid has a low potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.

Calcium dibenzoate: Using existing aquatic toxicity data of the dissociation products of calcium dibenzoate, the aquatic hazard assessment is based on the most toxic moiety, i.e. the benzoate anion. Existing aquatic toxicity data of benzoic acid are recalculated for calcium dibenzoate based on a maximum benzoate content of 85.8 %. Reliable aquatic toxicity data are available from guideline studies for microorganisms; the lowest EC10 and EC50 values amount to ≥ 1165.5 mg/L and > 1165.5 mg/L, respectively. In sum, calcium dibenzoate has a low potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.
