Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- relative density
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- July 2017
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: ASTM D 1298-85
- Version / remarks:
- re-approved in 1990
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- equivalent or similar to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 109 (Density of Liquids and Solids)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Type of method:
- buoyancy method - hydrometer
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- As the sample is exclusively produced and placed on the market in mineral oil, which cannot be removed from the product sufficiently, a pure sample was manufactured by using a volatile hydrocarbon solvent that could be removed afterwards. Thus, an almost pure sample was derived that was used for testing.
- Type:
- relative density
- Remarks:
- D20/4
- Density:
- 1.345
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- Remarks on result:
- other: measured at 20 °C and compared to density of water at 4 °C
- Conclusions:
- The relative density (D 20/4) of naphthenic acids, bismuth salts was determined by hdrometer method and found being 1.3450.
- Executive summary:
The relative density (D 20/4) of naphthenic acids, bismuth salts was determined according to ASTM D 1298 -85 (Standard Practice for Density, Relative Density (Specific Gravity), or API Gravity of Crude Petroleum and Liquid Petroleum Products by Hydrometer Method, reapproved 1990) which is equivalent/similar to the hydrometer method in OECD 109 method. The relative density determined at 20 °C was 1.3450 (compared to water at 4 °C).
