Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Readily biodegradable, but failing 10-day window

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable but failing 10-day window

Additional information

65% biodegradation in 28 days was determined in a reliable study conducted with trimethyl(octadecyloxy)silane according to an appropriate test protocol. The substance is therefore readily biodegradable, but failing the 10-day window. No lag phase was observed and 10% degradation was reached after 3 days. This suggests rapid hydrolysis of the alkoxysilane bond to form the hydrolysis products trimethylsilanol and octadecanol. The biodegradation observed can be attributed to degradation of the octadecanol hydrolysis product.
