Handling and storage
This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates and 18(4) for transported intermediates. Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each site.
Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from the downstream user of the registrant's intermediate.
- Precautions for safe handling:
Reaction systems must be sealed and operated in a closed state with venting only in accordance with Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit.
Check the equipment regularly and perform preventative maintenance to detect and repair leaks.
Loading from the storage to tankers must be done through a special loading system equipped with a vapor recovery system/extraction.
Use only in systems designed to ensure rigorous containment of the substance.
Flexible hoses/pipes must be emptied and purged with nitrogen before disconnecting.
All equipment (such as pumps, valves, compressors etc.) must be sealed.
Procedures are documented in a management system. Personnel must be trained, tested, supervised and equipped with specified personal protective equipment (PPE). Before maintenance and opening, the system must be washed with an organic solvent and purged with inert gas.
- Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:
Storage tanks and reaction vessels must be provided with “inert gas blankets” to both reduce the risk of fire and control fugitive emissions.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Normal operation
Workers must use PPE as a good practice to minimise possible exposures from minor accidental leaks during loading and unloading the reaction vessel. Procedures are implemented for disposal or cleaning of contaminated PPE.
Accident and incidents a fully trained Emergency Response Team (ERT) must be in place to react in case of accidents and incidents resulting in unexpected releases of the intermediate in order to minimize risks of exposures to humans and the environment.
Maintenance and cleaning
Workers must use additional PPE for cleaning the reaction vessel. A short exposure may occur during a maintenance operation, involving opening of a section of the pipeline connecting the reactor with loading station due to accidental presence of a residue of diluted intermediate that may lead to skin exposure. As a result, workers must be given a specific work instruction on how to open this section, and are required to use high-efficiency PPE for skin and respiratory protection, as a precautionary and protective measure during all maintenance work, where there is a potential for exposure. PPE type must specified in the permit-to-work documents. Procedures must be in place for disposal or cleaning of contaminated PPE, as appropriate.
