Description of key information

Result for a substance that consistent predominantly of triethylene glycol butyl ether and tetraethylene glycol butyl ether: 61.3-61.5mN/m at 20C (1g/l)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
61
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
1 000

Additional information

In a guideline study, the a substance that was predominantly a mixture of triethylene glycol butyl ether and tetraethylene glycol butyl ether was not found to be surface active. Based on structure activity considerations, both of these components would be expected to have a similar (lack of) surface active properties. If either exhibited surface activity, it would have been apparent in this test This value can therefore be considered valid for use with this substance. A solution of 1g/l in water produced a surface tension of 61.4mN/m at 20C.
