Study design

Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge, domestic, non-adapted
Details on inoculum:
Fresh activated sludge from a biological waste water treatment plant (Bois-de-Bay, Satigny, Switzeland) treating predominantly domestic sewage was used.
The sludge is collected in the morning, washed three times in the mineral medium (by centrifuging at 1000g for 10 minutes, discarding the supernatant and resuspending in mineral medium) and kept aerobic until being used on the same day.The sludge is collected in the morning, washed three times in the mineral medium (by centrifuging at 1000g for 10 minutes, discarding the supernatant and resuspending in mineral medium) and kept aerobic until being used on the same day.

Parameter:
% degradation (O2 consumption)
Value:

Sampling time:

Details on results:
The 10-day window criterion is also fulfilled (11% biodegradation on day 4 and 78% on day 14).

The test was extended beyond the standard 28 days. The mean biodegradation after 60 days was 97%.

Panthenyltriacetate did not inhibit the intrinsic respiration of the inoculum at the test concentration and was therefore considered to be non-toxic to the inoculum at the test concentration.

BOD5 / COD results

Results with reference substance:
Degradation of sodium benzoate exceeded 40% after 7 days and 65% after 14 days: the activity of the inoculum was thus verified (validity criterion).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Remarks:
Degradation of sodium benzoate exceeded 40% after 7 days and 65% after 14 days: the activity of the inoculum was thus verified. The repeatability validity criterion (not more than 20% difference between replicates) is fulfilled.
Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
The ready biodegradability of Panthenyltriacetate was determined by the manometric respiration test.

Panthenyltriacetate undergoes 87% biodegradation after 28 days in the test conditions. The 10-day window criterion is also fulfilled (11% biodegradation on day 4 and 78% on day 14).

Panthenyltriacetate did not inhibit the intrinsic respiration of the inoculum at the test concentrations and was therefore considered to be non-toxic to the inoculum at the test concentration.

Thus, Panthenyltriacetate should be regarded as readily biodegradable according to this test.
