Calculation

Calibration Factor (ø)

The calibration factor (ø), by which the measured surface tension of the sample solution is multiplied, was determined using the following equation:

Ø = VL/Vm

Where:

Ø = calibration factor

VL= literature value for surface tension of water at test temperature (mN/m)

Vm= measured value for surface tension of water at test temperature (mN/m)

Results

Calibration factor (Ø)

The readings, temperatures and the corresponding calibration factors for glass double-distilled water are shown in the table below:

 Reading (mN/m)  Temperature (°C) Literature Value (mN/m)  Calibration Factor
  72.6     20.0   72.75  1.002
  72.8   20.0   72.75    0.999
  72.6   20.0   72.75   1.002
  72.6   20.0   72.75   1.002
  72.6   20.0   72.75   1.002
  72.6   20.0   72.75   1.002

Mean calibration factor = 1.002

Sample solution readings

The readings, times and temperatures of the sample solution are shown in the table below:

 Time (mins)  Reading (mN/m)   Temperature (°C)
 60 60.8   20.0
 70  63.2  20.0
 76  65.2  20.0
 81  66.3  20.0
 85  66.6  20.0
 89  67.8  20.0
 93  68.0  20.0
 97  68.2  20.0
 102  68.2  20.0
 106  68.4  20.0
 110  68.2  22.0
 116  68.4  20.0

Mean of final five readings    = 68.3 mN/m

Surface tension                     = reading x calibration factor

= 68.3 x 1.002

= 68.4 mN/m

Temperature = 20.0 ± 0.5°C

Conclusions:
The surface tension of a 1.04 g/l solution of Ethyl tetrahydrofurufryl ether has been determined to be 68.4 mN/m at 20.0 ± 0.5°C.
Ethyl tetrahydrofurfuryl ether is considered not to be a surface active material.
