Additional information

No short-term fish toxicity data were available for the submission substance, CAS No. 70225-05-7. However, read-across data for a structurally related trimellitate ester, tri-2-ethylhexyl trimellitate or tri-octyl trimellitate (TOTM)(CAS No. 3319-31-1) were available to help assess short-term toxicity in fish for the submission substance.

 

The surrogate material, tri-2-ethylhexyl trimellitate (CAS 3319-31-1) has been evaluated for acute toxicity in medaka (Oryzias latipes) in freshwater. At loadings up to 100 mg/L in a limited test, no significant mortality was observed relative to that in controls. The 96-hr LL50 was determined to be greater 100 mg/L and the 96-hr NOEL was estimated to greater than 100 mg/L.  Overall, the surrogate trimellitate, TOTM, was not acutely toxic to fish at its maximal water solubility.  

 

Conclusions: Based on the read-across non-toxicity findings for the surrogate trimellitate TOTM and owing to their related chemical similarity, the submission trimellitate substance, CAS No. 70225-05-7, also would not be expected to be acutely toxic to fish at its maximal water solubility limit. The findings are consistent with the structurally chemical similarity and close physicochemical characteristics (e.g., low water solubility) between these two trimellitate materials.  The absence of acute toxicity may be due in part to their low water solubility, resulting in low exposure potential in the aqueous compartment as well as to the ability of organisms to metabolize or biodegrade the test materials.
