Description of key information

The lowest 72-h ErC50 and ErC10 values (2907 and 716 µg V/L, respectively) for growth rate of the green alga Scenedesmus subspicatus were observed for V2O5 flakes (Mitterer, 1999; Klimisch 2).

Reliable GLP-conform studies (Klimisch 2) are available for the effect of V2O5 flakes, NaVO3 and ammonium polyvanadate on the biomass and growth rate of Scenedesmus subspicatus, according to the OECD 201 guideline. Results for growth rate are preferred for the effects assessment and EC10 values are preferred over NOEC values. 72h-ErC50-values for growth rate are 2907, 7619 and 3865 µg V/L for vanadium pentoxide flakes, sodium metavanadate and ammonium polyvanadate, respectively. Corresponding ErC10 values are 716, 4342 and 1796 µg V/L, respectively (Mitterer, 1999). In 72-h growth inhibition tests according to OECD 201 with freshwater algae Ankistrodesmus falcatus, Navicula pelliculosa and Raphidocelis subcapitata (formerly known as Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Selenastrum capricornutum) and sodium metavanadate, 72-h ErC10 values of 1.01, 5.73 and 1.93 mg Vanadium/L (mean measured) were determined for the inhibition of growth rate whereas the corresponding ErC50 values amount to 3.94, 8.0 and 7.55 mg Vanadium/L (mean measured), respectively (Wenzel, 2017). No reliable data are available for the toxicity of vanadium substances to marine algae. All results are based on total dissolved V concentrations.
