PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB

1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate is an organic peroxide, having a self-accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) of +10 °C. At a standard environmental temperature of 12°C 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl undergoes immediate decomposition upon dissolution in aqueous media.

Since the test item is not stable, the decomposition product neodecanoic acid (CAS No.: 26896-20-8) is a relevant molecule for the assessment of environmental properties including ecotoxicity and bioaccumulation potential. PBT properties have therefore been evaluated taking into consideration the parent compound and the decomposition product.

1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate has further been demonstrated to be readily biodegradable (OECD 301 B testing). Any decomposition products (in particular neodecanioc acid) are considered to be themselves sufficiently rapidly degraded as not to require further assessment. Therefore, it can be concluded that neodecanoic acid is non-persistent (not P nor vP).

Therefore, it can be concluded that 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate including its decomposition products is not persistent (not P, not vP).

Any other degradation products that may be formed during decomposition do not require specific assessment, since they are themselves rapidly degraded.

Neither 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate nor its decomposition products have PBT properties. Specifically, the decomposition product neodecanoic acid is considered readily biodegradable and not liable to bioaccumulate. It is considered to not fulfil the toxicity criteria based on information from the ECHA C&L inventory (accessed on April 16, 2018).
