Description of key information

Succinic acid and salts are found naturally in cells as metabolites and low molecular weight / water soluble derivatives have been evaluated for use in foods and cosmetics and concluded to be of low toxicity. There is no evidence of any target organ effect at treatment levels regarded as reasonable for assessment (ie up to 1000 mg/kg/day).

Triethanolamine has been extensively assessed for toxic effects in view of the widespread use of the amine and derivatives in cosmetic ingredients.

Based on the assessment for the dissociation products, there is no indication that there will be adverse effect on health, including target organ effects or effects on reproduction.

Further animal testing cannot be justified on this salt.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
