- Conclusions:
- The MMAD (Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter < 100 μm) has a value of 3.98 μm as spherical particles.
- Executive summary:
According to OECD guideline 110, method B, the particle size distribution of was determined by scanning electron microscopy method for the sieved fraction (< 100 µm, 51.83 % of total sample) and presented on the basis of calculated mass fractions. The median diameter was 3.98 µm as spherical particles with the two main fractions of 31.53 and 63.71 % distributing in the range of 4-100 µm and hence the tested particles with sieved size smaller than 100 µm are mainly dominated by inhalable and thoracic fractions as defined in EU 481.

Sieve Fraction (100 µm sieve):
- Weighted sample: 0.8205 g
- Weight fraction < 100 µm: 0.4253 g
- Sieve mass fraction < 100 µm: 51.83 %
The mass fraction < 100 µm was investigated by scanning eletron microscopy. The median aspect ration was 1.51.
The median diameter of the particle size is given for the fraction < 100 µm. The value of 3.98 µm was calculated for spherical particle and a value of 4.46 µm was calculated for cubical particle.
Particle size | Spherical Volume [%] | Cubical Volume [%] |
< 4 µm (respirable) | 4.76 | 5.29 |
4 - 10 µm (thoracic) | 31.53 | 34.15 |
10 - 100 µm (inhalable) | 63.71 | 60.56 |
> 100 µm | 0.00 | 0.00 |
Median (diameter µm) | 3.98 | 4.46 |
Description of key information
Mass fraction as spherical particles:

2,47% < 4 µm
Additional information
According to OECD guideline 110, method B, the particle size distribution of was determined by scanning electron microscopy method for the sieved fraction (< 100 µm, 51.83 % of total sample) and presented on the basis of calculated mass fractions. The median diameter was 3.98 µm as spherical particles with the two main fractions of 31.53 and 63.71 % distributing in the range of 4-100 µm and hence the tested particles with sieved size smaller than 100 µm are mainly dominated by inhalable and thoracic fractions as defined in EU 481.
The values presented above as key information were recalculated to represent the distribution in the total (non sieved) substance.
