Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The registration substance is a betain containing a deprotonated carboxylate and a quarternary ammonium function under environmental conditions.

Sorption is dominated by ionic interactions rather than hydrophobic partitioning with organic matter. The alkyl ammonium ions present under environmental conditions can interact with the surfaces of mineral particles or with negatively charged humic substances.

Therefore, a high sorption is expected, depending mostly on the ambient pH and the clay content of the sorbent, rather than hydrophobic interaction.

In a weight of evidence approach three commonly acepted calculation methods have been used to estimate the Koc of the substance.

As EUSES and the Kow method of EPI-WIN uses log pow as main source for the calculation and considering that sorption is not solely depending on passive hydrophobic distribution the MCI metod of EPI-WIN provides the most reliable result.

Compared to other registered betains and compared to other registered quarternary ammonium compounds the resulting value of Koc=23720 L/kg seems to be a reasonable worst case value and is therefore used for risk assessment.
