- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- April 11th, 2017
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- test procedure in accordance with generally accepted scientific standards and described in sufficient detail
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- The test item was used in its initial form.
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- other: not classified, according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008)
- Conclusions:
- Non flammable
- Executive summary:
The flammability potential of the test substance has been assayed following the testing procedures outlined into the EU method A.10. The test item was loosely filled into a mould. Then the mould was dropped three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface. The lateral limitations were removed and the excess substance was scraped off. A non-combustible and non-porous plate was placed on top of the mould. This was inverted and the mould was removed. The flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train for 2 minutes. The burning of the pile was observed. The test was performed twice.
In the preliminary experiment, the test item could not be ignited, thus no further investigation was performed.
Conclusion
Non flammable.
Reference
Based on the results of the preliminary test, no further investigation was performed. The test item is considered not highly flammable.
Description of key information
non flammable
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
EU method A.10
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, 2.7 section, flammable solids, powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2.2 mm/s.
In the flammability test performed, the substance did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore the substance resulted non flammable.
In conclusion, the Direct Orange 118 does not meet the criteria to be classified as flammable, according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
