Safety pre-test 1

When heated on a magnesia groove over a Bunsen burner, the test item started to boil. The test item became black at the surface and burned with an orange sooting flame.

When the test item was beaten with a hammer on the anvil, no reaction was observed.

Safety pre-test 2

After reaching a temperature of 520°C and cooling down the weight of the crucible was recorded with 624.97 mg, the gold sealing of the crucible was bulged outwards.

Then the crucible was opened, the gold sealing was brown discolored at the inside and the test item was black. An odour like motor oil was noted.

DSC Screening of the Test Item

After a small endothermal event at 81.3°C, a series of small endo and exo events were recorded between ca 360 and 400°C, likely caused by decomposition. Only the two major exothermal signals were integrated:

After measurement, the weight of the crucible was recorded with 626.12 mg; the gold sealing was coppery discoloured at the outside. At the inside the crucible and the sealing was black discoloured.

Based on the exothermal event, it is stated that the released energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C; therefore the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied, according to the UN Handbook “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods; Manual of Tests and Criteria” (2015).

Conclusions:
The released energy is much less than 500 J/g, the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied.
No additional testing is required. The substance shall not be classified as explosive according to Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008 (CLP).
Executive summary:

The thermal stability of the substance was tested under GLP, with Differential Scanning Calorimetry, in accordance with conditions recommended in UN MTC screening procedure/OECD guideline.

During the DSC run, many slightly exothermal events caused by decomposition were observed, starting from ca 360°C. Therefore only the biggest events were integrated to derive the related energy (in J/g). Up to the maximum test temperature of 520°C, the maximum energy release was 18 J/g.
