The pure test item showed an exothermic effect starting at a temperature of 235 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of approx. 290 °C (corresponding temperature of the reference material 260 °C). After this, the temperature of the test item was permanent over the temperature of the reference material and led to a maximum temperature of approx. 490 °C (corresponding oven temperature 405 °C). After the test a black residue was left inside the wire basket.

For the test item in mixture with Kieselguhr an multistage exothermic process was detected starting at a temperature of approx. 240 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of approx. 470 °C (corresponding temperature of the reference material 370 °C).

Executive summary:

The self-ignition behavior of the test item was determined in the oven according to VDI 2263, sheet 1. For this purpose, the test item was filled in a small wire basket and was placed into the oven; an additional basket was filled with a reference material (graphite). The temperature of the oven was increased with a constant heating rate (1.2 K/min) in an air stream of 100 to 120 l per hour and the temperature of the sample was recorded as a function of time at intervals of 10 seconds. Since very often, the test item melts before a self-ignition takes place, the self-ignition behavior of the sample blended with 50 wt.-% Kieselguhr was investigated in a third wire basket simultaneously. Kieselguhr has a high specific surface area and prevents the test item from flowing out of the baskets.
