Description of key information

In a 7 day acute toxicity study with Lemna gibba a nominal ErC50 of 0.044 mg/L and an ErC10 of 0.0003 mg/L based on frond number was determined. (BASF SE, 2015)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater plants:
0.044 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater plants:
0 mg/L

Additional information

The growth of Lemna gibba exposed to the test item was investigated in a 7 day semi-static test with daily renewals according to OECD guideline 221 (BASF SE, 2015). The test was performed in glass crystallizers containing 150 mL of each treatment per replicate. Seven test item concentrations of 1.0, 0.2, 0.04, 0.008, 0.0016, 0.00032, 0.000064 mg/L plus the control were used in the test. At exposure termination, in the test item concentrations of 0.000064, 0.00032 and 0.0016 mg/L no distinctive changes from the normal development of plants in the control were observed. In the test item concentration of 0.008 mg/L, separating of roots and chlorosis were observed. In the test item concentration of 0.04 mg/L, separating of roots, bending down of colonies and chlorosis were observed. In the test item concentration of 0.2 mg/L, separating of roots, colored roots, bending down of colonies, breaking up of colonies and chlorosis were observed. In the test item concentration of 1.0 mg/L, separating of roots, colored roots and fronds, bending down of colonies, breaking up of colonies and necrosis were observed.

After 7 days an ErC50 of 0.044 mg/L (95% CI 0.0024 - 0.0082) and ErC10 of 0.0003 mg/L (95% CI 0.0001 - 0.0009) was determined based on frond number.
