Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.4 (Test method for self-heating substances)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test was performed as stipulated in test procedure VDI 2263, Part 1 ‘Test Methods for the Determination of the Safety Characteristic of Dusts’.
Appendix 6, point 5.2.2 of UN-MTC test procedure refers to the Grewer oven test.
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage: Room temperature
Test procedure:
other: heated up above 400 °C at a rate of 0.5 K/min in an air flow of about 20 L/h
Max. temp. reached:
400
Induction time (h):
12
Result:
negative outcome (no effect observed)

The sample showed multiple endothermic reactions starting at about 83 °C. No exothermic effects were determined up to the point at which the test substance melted. The wire mesh basket was empty after the measurement. The test item is not a self-heating substance in the sense of CLP Annex I, 2.11. The determination according to UN-MTC Procedure N.4 (Bowes-Cameron-Cage-Test) is not necessary.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is not a self-heating substance in the sense of CLP Annex I, 2.11. The determination according to UN-MTC Procedure N.4 (Bowes-Cameron-Cage-Test) is not necessary.
Executive summary:

The test was performed as stipulated in test procedure VDI 2263, Part 1 ‘Test Methods for the Determination of the Safety Characteristic of Dusts’.

The sample in its delivery state and an inert reference sample are heated up above 400 °C at a rate of 0.5 K/min in an air flow of about 20 L/h. The sample showed multiple endothermic reactions starting at about 83 °C. No exothermic effects were determined up to the point at which the test substance melted. The wire mesh basket was empty after the measurement. Therefore, the test item is not a self-heating substance in the sense of CLP Annex I, 2.11 and not classified based on GHS criteria. Based on this results the determination according to UN-MTC Procedure N.4 (Bowes-Cameron-Cage-Test) is not necessary.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage: Room temperature
Test procedure:
burning rate test with wetted zone
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

The test item melted when approached by the ignition flame. After a time the melt burned. It was only a local reaction. The flame extinguished within the start segment. No further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test item is a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.
Executive summary:

The test item was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a non-combustible, non-porous and low heat-conducting base plate. 30 – 40 mm beyond the 100 mm timing zone, 1 mL of a wetting solution was added to the pile. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train until the powder ignites or for a maximum of 2 minutes. A preliminary screening test was performed to determine if propagation by burning with flame or smoldering occurs without wetted zone. If propagation over 200 mm of the train occurs within a specified time then a full test programme to determine the burning rate was carried out.

The test item melted when approached by the ignition flame. After a time the melt burned. It was only a local reaction. The flame extinguished within the start segment. No further testing was required.

The test item is a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.

Description of key information

The test item is a non-flammable solid according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1 and did not deliver indications of pyrophoric properties during the realization of other tests. Therefore the determination according to UN-MTC Procedure N.2 is not necessary. The chemical structure of the substance contains no metals or metalloids. Testing according to UN-MTC procedure N.5 is not necessary with reference to Appendix 6, chapter 5.3. The test item is not liable to self-heating according to UN-N.4.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

1. Flammability: the test item is a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.

2. Pyrophoric properties: the test item did not deliver indications of pyrophoric properties during the realization of other tests. Testing according to UN-MTC procedure N.2 is not necessary.

3. Contact with water: The chemical structure of the test item contains no metals or metalloids. Testing according to UN-MTC procedure N.5 is not necessary with reference to Appendix 6, chapter 5.3.

4. Self-heating properties: the test item is not a self-heating substance in terms of CLP Annex I, 2.11. The determination according to UN-MTC Procedure N.4 (Bowes-Cameron-Cage-Test) is not necessary.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item is a non-flammable solid and does not exhibit self-heating properties. Bases on the available information the test item is not classified for physical hazards according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP).
