Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates studies conducted with 2-butoxyethanol (EU RAR for CAS 111-76-2, 2006) report a 48 h EC50 of 835 mg/L for freshwater invertebrates, and a 24 h EC50 of 1000 mg/L for marine invertebrates.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water invertebrates

Fresh water invertebrates
Effect concentration:
835 mg/L

Marine water invertebrates

Marine water invertebrates
Effect concentration:
1 000 mg/L

Additional information

In view of the rapid hydrolysis of the registered substance to silicic acid and 2-butoxyethanol and the absence of toxicity to aquatic organisms of silicic acid, the PNECaquatic(freshwater) will be based on data for 2-butoxyethanol.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates studies conducted with 2-butoxyethanol report a 72 h EC50 of 540 mg/L, and a 48 h EC50 of 835 mg/L for freshwater invertebrates (respectively Hydra attenuata / H. vulgaris and Daphnia magna). A 24 h EC50 of 1000 mg/L was reported for marine invertebrates, Artemia salina.
