Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish studies conducted with 2-butoxyethanol indicate the lowest LC50 (7 d) value to be 983 mg/L for freshwater fish, and 96 h LC50 of 1125 mg/L for marine fish (EU RAR for 111-76-2).

Additional information

In view of the rapid hydrolysis of the registered substance to silicic acid and 2-butoxyethanol and the absence of toxicity to aquatic organisms of silicic acid, the PNECaquatic(freshwater) will be based on data for 2-butoxyethanol.

Short-term toxicity to fish studies conducted with 2-butoxyethanol indicate reliable 96 h LC50 values to be in the range 1474 to 2137 mg/L for freshwater fish, and a 96 h LC50 of 1125 mg/L for marine water fish. In addition, a 24 h LC50 value of 1700 mg/l, 48 h LC50 values of 1395 -1575 mg/l and a 7 d LC50 value of 983 mg/l were reported for freshwater fish (EU RAR (2006))
