Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Name sodium 3-sulfobenzoate
Batch no. 170103
CAS No. 17625-03-5
Purity > 99.0% (Titration with NaOH, Glass indicating electrode, Calomel reference electrode)
Expiry date 14. Feb. 2019
Storage Room Temperature (20 ± 5°C), keep away from humidity
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Safety Pre-Test

The test substance melted into a black liquid. The liquid expanded and a black residue was observed.

Preliminary Screening Test

The test substance melted into a black liquid. The liquid expanded and a black residue was observed. In the second experiment, the test substance melted into a brown-black liquid. The liquid got bubbles, when the flame of the burner was taken away from the liquid. No signs of ignition were observed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item was heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes. Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), resp. No determination of burning rate was necessary.
Executive summary:

The determination of the flammability of sodium 3-sulfobenzoate has been performed according to EU A.10. In the preliminary Screening Test the substance was heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes. Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), resp. No determination of burning rate was necessary.
