Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The test substance belongs to the substance category of Phthalocyanines whose category members resemble in their chemical structure as well as in their physico-chemical properties. Thus, read-across data from analogous substances of the phthalocyanine category were used to cover this endpoint. In order to assess the toxicity of ammonium [trisulphamoyl-29H,31H-phthalocyaninesulphonato(3-)-N29,N30,N31,N32]cuprat e(1-) (CAS 94534-99-3), read-across data for the structurally analogous substances Pigment Additive PAG/Cu-phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) and Direct Blue 199 sodium salt (Direct Blue 199_Na; CAS 90295-11-7) were taken into account:

- The inhibitory effect of Direct Blue 199 sodium salt (Direct Blue 199_Na; CAS 90295-11-7) on oxygen consumption of activated sludge microorganisms of a municipal sewage treatment plant was investigated under aerobic static conditions, according to the OECD Guideline 209 (Achroma, 2006). Nominal concentrations of the test substance were 125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/l, respectively. At the tested concentrations, no significant toxic effects were shown to the activated sludge indicating a 180min EC50 of >2000 mg/L (nominal).

- The changes in the respiration rate of activated sludge in presence of Pigment Additive PAG/Cu-phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) were investigated in a GLP study according to OECD guideline 209 (BASF SE, 2015). At test termination after 3 hours a 180min EC10 of > 1000 mg/L (nominal) was determined.

Conclusion:

Based on the available read-across data it can be concluded, that the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated if ammonium [trisulphamoyl-29H,31H-phthalocyaninesulphonato(3-)-N29,N30,N31,N32]cuprat e(1-) (CAS 94534-99-3) is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
