Four stock solutions were made, CaCl2.2H2O 11.76 g/l; MgSO4.7H2O 4.93 g/l; NaHCO3 2.59 g/l and KCl 0.23 g/l. An aliquot (25 ml) of each of these solutions was added to each litre of deionised water with a conductivity of < 5 µS cm-1 and pH equal to 7.8 +/- 0.2, adjusted if necessary wuth NaOH or HCl.
