A ready biodegradation test, following the OECD 301F guideline (Manometric Respirometry Test) and GLP , was conducted on the2-amino-6-chloro-4-nitrophenol.

The substance was tested at 100 mg /L (or 68 mg O2/L on the basis of theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD)). The inoculum was activated sludge collected from the aeration tank of the facility's sewage treatment plant, receiving predominantly domestic sewage. Test treatments and blank were run in duplicate while for toxicity and reference control were run singly.

The test material did not meet the criteria for ready biodegradation. Oxygen consumption, and thus the derived BOD, showed minimal or no degradation of the substance. Measured values from the flask acting as the toxicity control (test and reference material combined) indicated that the test material was not inhibitory to the activated sludge.

Values obtained with the positive control reference substance, sodium benzoate, showed that more than 60% of the ThOD was reached within 14 days, thus demonstrating the validity of the test system. (% degradation on Day 2 = 38.9%, Day 6 = 62.9% and Day 28 = 68.9%).

This ready biodegradation test is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements for the OECD 301F.
