The burning index of the test substance was examined, according to VDI 2263. The test was performed at ambient temperature (20 °C) and at elevated temperature (100 °C) as well. It provides an indication –using a combustibility index number, 1 to 6– of the extent to which a localised hot spot will propagate throughout a given sample of powder. If a burning index of 3 or less is found, the substance or mixture should not be classified as a flammable solid and no further testing is required.

Justification for classification or non-classification
According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), flammable solid means a solid which is readily combustible, or may cause or contribute to fire through friction. Powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN-RTDG), Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2.2 mm/s.
According to the ECHA Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria (v. 5.0, July 2017), alternatively to the above mentioned screening method, the burning index (referred to as ‘class number’ in VDI 2263) as obtained from the Burning Behaviour test (VDI 2263, part 1) may be used. If a burning index of 3 or less is found, the substance or mixture should not be classified as a flammable solid and no further testing is required.
Burning index at room temperature and at 100 °C resulted to be 3, thus the substance can be considered as non-flammable.
