Self-ignition in the Grewer oven

In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer oven for the pure test item an exothermic process was detected from above 260 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of approx. 280 °C (10 °C above the corresponding temperature of the reference material). No further thermal effects could be observed up to the maximum test temperature of 400 °C. The test item welled out of the basket during the test. This may be caused by a decomposition accompanied by a formation of gaseous decomposition products. This effect was also observed in the DSC measurements (see report on melting point CSL-16-1457.01). This also may be the reason, that the temperature rise is only about 10 °C above the reference temperature.

For the test item in mixture with Kieselguhr an exothermic effect was observed from starting at a temperature of approx. 260 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of approx. 390 °C (120 °C above the corresponding temperature of the reference material). No further thermal effects could be observed up to the maximum test temperature of 400 °C.

Final Results / Classification

The pure test item dehydroacetic acid sodium salt indicated a slight self-ignition at atmospheric pressure starting at a temperature of 260 °C. Due to the high onset temperature in the Grewer oven, it can be assumed that the UN test N.4 using the 25 mm cube sample at 140 °C is negative.

On the basis of the results of the tests on the self-ignition in the Grewer oven the test item is classified as non-self-heating substance (neither according to UN Transport regulation nor according to GHS / CLP).

Description of key information

The substance dehydroacetic acid sodium salt is not self-heating (UN N.4, Grewer oven).
