Justification for type of information:
The test was conducted according to the protocol recommended in the EFFA/EFEO guideline, "The Regsitration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients" to describe the state of the essential oil at several temperatures. Test substance is adequately specified. Therefore full validation applies.

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test item is a mixture of constituents and transition from liquid to solid will not be sharp. The „Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance” from ECHA (2008), mentioned that „Melting points are not normally carried out for mixtures“. In addition, according to column 2, point 7.2 of Annex VII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH), „The study does not need to be conducted below a lower limit of -20°C“.
Therefore it is recommended in the EFFA/EFEO guideline „The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients” to describe the state of the essential oil after two days at +5°C . If it is still a liquid the test has to be repeated at -20°C - rather than determining a transition temperature.

The state of the sample and the colour have remained unchanged.

The substance has been observed several times at three temperatures as shown in table 4.2/1. Although the viscosity increased at the lowest temperature, the consistency remained unchanged. No freezing point could be obtained down to -20°C.

Conclusions:
No freezing point could be obtained down to -20°C.
Executive summary:

A test was conducted in order to determine the physical state of the substance at +20°C, +5°C and -20°C during 48h at atmospheric pressure. The test item was still liquid at - 20 °C.

According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) annex VII, column 2 of section 7.2, the determination of the melting / freezing point does not need to be conducted below a lower limit of - 20 °C. Therefore, no additional test was conducted and the freezing point is stated as < - 20 °C (< 253.15 K).
