The influence of the test substance sek. Alkansulfonat C14 -17 on the reproduction and survival rate of Daphnia magna was investigated in a 22 days semistatic test following the Proposal for an update of OECD Guideline 202, Part II, Draft 6/5/91. The test was performed in compliance with the Good Laboratory Practice Regulations.
The nominal concentrations tested were 0.10, 0.32, 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 mg test substance/1 and a control.
Biological test results:
Taking into account the survival rates and the reproduction rates of the test animals, the highest concentration of sek. Alkansulfonat C14 -17 tested without toxic effects (NOEC) after the exposure period of 22 days was determined to be nominal 1.0 mg test substance/1 (mean measured test substance concentration: 0.6 mg/1). The lowest concentration tested with toxic effects (LOEC) was nominal 3.2 mg test substance/L (mean measured test substance concentration: 1.9 mg/1) due to the high mortality rate of Daphnia magna at this test concentration.
Analytical results:
The analytically determined test substance concentrations in the freshly prepared test media varied in the range from 75 % to 108 % of the nominal values, in the mean over all measurements from 92 % to 102 % of the nominal values. During the test medium renewal periods of 48 to 72 hours, the test substance concentrations strongly decreased. In the samples, taken out of the test media of the biological test (including algal food) after the 48 hours respectively 72 hours exposure periods, concentrations at or below the determination limit of the analytical method were determined. The arithmetical mean values between the measured test substance concentrations in the freshly prepared test media and the measured concentrations in the 48 hours respectively 72 hours old test media amounted to 0.18 mg/1 (= 55 % of nominal) at nominal 0.32 mg/1, to 0.6 mg/1 (61 % of nominal) at nominal 1.0 mg/1, and to 1.9 mg/1 (55 % of nominal) at nominal 3.2 mg/1.
