- Just before each test medium preparation the test substance was homogenized by intensive stirring. Then an adequate amount of the homogenized test substance was weighed into test water for the preparation of a stock solution (nominal 100 mg/L). Adequate volumes of this stock solution were added to test water to obtain the desired test concentrations. The test media were intensively stirred before introduction of Daphnia.
The nominal concentrations tested were 0.10, 0.32, 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 mg test substance/L. Additionally, a control was tested in parallel (test water
without addition of the test substance).
Vehicle:

Details on test solutions:
- Water temperature: 20.5 - 21.2 °C during the test period
- Light: 16 hours per day, approximately 370 - 600 Lux
-Test duration: 22 days since it was apparent at the observation of the test animals an Day 21 that some Daphnia would release their offspring from
brood pouch in the next hours, the test was extended for 24 hours until Day 22
- The pH value was maesured to be 7.9.
- Just before each test medium preparation the test substance was homogenized by intensive stirring.
Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
- The study has been performed with females of clone 5 of the species Daphnia magna Straus. The clone was supplied by the BASF AG, D-67056
Ludwigshafen in January 1993, and then was bred in the laboratories of RCC under the same standardized conditions and in the same kind of test
water as used in the test. At the start of the test the young Daphnia used were less than 24 hours old.
- temperature conditions : 20.5 - 21.2 °C during the test period
- Light: 16 hours per day, approximately 370 - 600 Lux
- The culture water (so-called 'M4 medium) was partly renewed once a week.
- The Daphnia were fed at the same time intervals and additionally on two days per weeks with green algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus), freshly
grown in the laboratories of RCC.

Details on results:
The analytically determined test substance concentrations in the samples from the freshly prepared stock solutions amounted from 97 % to 106 % of the nominal concentration.

Analytical results

The analytically determined test substance concentrations in the samples from the freshly prepared stock solutions amounted from 97 % to 106 % of the nominal concentration. The measured test substance concentrations in the samples from the freshly prepared test media varied in the range from 75 % to 108 % of the nominal values. The mean values over all measurements in the samples from the freshly prepared

test media of nominal 0.32 mg/1 amounted to 92 %, at the test concentration of nominal 1. 0 mg/ 1 to 102 % , and at the test concentration of nominal 3. 2 mg/1 to 98 % of the respective nominal value.

During the test medium renewal periods of 48 to 72 hours, the test substance concentrations strongly decreased. In the samples, taken out of the test media of the biological test (including algal food) after the 48 hours respectively 72 hours exposure periods, concentrations at or below the determination limit of the analytical method were determined. The arithmetical mean values between the measured test substance concentrations on Days 12 and 16 (freshly prepared test media) and the.measured concentrations on Days 14 and 19 (48 hours respectively 72 hours old test media) amounted to 0.18 mg/1 (= 55 % of nominal) at nominal 0.32 mg/1, to 0.6 mg/1 (61 % of nominal) at nominal 1.0 mg/1, and to 1.9 mg/1 (55 % of nominal) at nominal 3.2 mg/1.

Validity criteria fulfilled:

Conclusions:
The acute toxicity of Paraffin oils, sulfochlorinated, saponified to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was tested according to OECD Guideline 202, Part II, Draft 6/5/91: "Prolonged Toxicity Study with Daphnia magna: Effects an Reproduction" The highest concentration of toxic effects (NOEC) was 0.6 mg/L and the lowest concentration of toxic effects (LOEC) was 1.9 mg/L after 22 days (RCC Umweltchemie, 1995).
Executive summary:

The influence of the test substance sek. Alkansulfonat C14 -17 on the reproduction and survival rate of Daphnia magna was investigated in a 22 days semistatic test following the Proposal for an update of OECD Guideline 202, Part II, Draft 6/5/91. The test was performed in compliance with the Good Laboratory Practice Regulations.

The nominal concentrations tested were 0.10, 0.32, 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 mg test substance/1 and a control.

Biological test results:

Taking into account the survival rates and the reproduction rates of the test animals, the highest concentration of sek. Alkansulfonat C14 -17 tested without toxic effects (NOEC) after the exposure period of 22 days was determined to be nominal 1.0 mg test substance/1 (mean measured test substance concentration: 0.6 mg/1). The lowest concentration tested with toxic effects (LOEC) was nominal 3.2 mg test substance/L (mean measured test substance concentration: 1.9 mg/1) due to the high mortality rate of Daphnia magna at this test concentration.

Analytical results:

The analytically determined test substance concentrations in the freshly prepared test media varied in the range from 75 % to 108 % of the nominal values, in the mean over all measurements from 92 % to 102 % of the nominal values. During the test medium renewal periods of 48 to 72 hours, the test substance concentrations strongly decreased.
