Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:

Type of method:
differential scanning calorimetry
Specific details on test material used for the study:
4-chloroformylphthalic anhydride
Decomposition:
yes
Decomp. temp.:
>= 200 °C

Preliminary test:

The test substance was heated at a rate of 20°C/minute from 25°C to 342°C. From 225°C upwards the weight of the sample decreased significantly. At 316°C the sample weight had decreased by 25%. At the final temperature, 70% weight loss of the test substance was observed.

After the experiment, brown/black residue was observed on the lid of the sample container and a brown deposit remained in the sample container (original colour: off-white). The change of the colour indicated reaction and/or decomposition of the test substance.

Main test:

The experiment has been performed, under nitrogen and at atmospheric pressure, in the following conditions:

 Experiment
 Sample amount (mg) 3.78
 Crucible

Aluminium,

pierced

 Initial temperature (°C)  25
 Rate (°C/min)  20
 End temperature (°C)  316

After the melting peak, a weak additional endothermic effect starting from 200°C can also be seen. After the experiment, a light brown molten residue remained in the sample container. The change of the colour indicated reaction and/or decomposition of the test item.

Conclusions:
No boiling point before decomposition starting at ca 200°C.
Executive summary:

The boiling point of the test item was determined with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) according to recognized guidelines (OECD Guideline 103,EU Method A.2 and EPA OPPTS 830.7220) and under GLP. No deviations from the guidelines have been observed during the test.

Based on weight loss in preliminary TGA, weak endotherm event in DSC, and change of colour of the sample, it was concluded that the test item has no boiling point up to decomposition, starting from ca 200°C.

Description of key information

No boiling point before decomposition starting at ca 200°C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
