Sampling and analysis

Details on sampling:
The test material was dissolved directly in the culture medium

Test solutions

Vehicle:
no
Details on test solutions:
The test material was dissolved directly in the culture medium.
An amount of 160 mg of test material was dissolved in culture medium and the volume adjusted to 500 mL to give a 320 mg/L stock solution from which a series of dilutions was made to give further stock solutions of 32, 16, 8, 4, and 2 mg/L. An aliquot (250mL) of each of the 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 mg/L stock solutions was separately mixed with algal suspension (250mL) to give the required test concentrations of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 mg/L.

The stock solutions and each of the prepared concentrations were inverted several times to ensure adequate mixing and homogeneity.

The concentration, homogeneity, and stability of the test material in the test preparations were not determined at the request of the Sponsor.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
other: scenedesmus Subspicatus
Details on test organisms:
strain CCAP 276/20. Liquid cultures of Scenedesmus Subspicatus were obtained from the culture collection of algae and protozoa (CCAP), Institute of Freshwater Ecology, The Ferry House, Far Sawrey, Ambleside, Cumbria. Cultures were maintained in the lab by the periodic replenishment of culture medium. The culture was maintained in the lab at a temperature of 21C under continuous illumination (intensity approximately 7000 lux) and constant aeration

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The effect of the test material on the growth of Scenedesmus subspicatus has been investigated over a 72-hr period and gave EC50 (72hr / biomass) value of 3.7 mg/L; 95% confidence limits 3.0-4.6 mh/L and EC50 (72hr growth rate) value of 12 mg/L. The No Oserved Effect Concentration at 72 hrs was 1.0 mg/L
Executive summary:

Using test method OECD 201, the effect of the test material on the growth of Scenedesmus subspicatus has been investigated over a 72-hr period and gave EC50 (72hr / biomass) value of 3.7 mg/L; 95% confidence limits 3.0-4.6 mh/L and EC50 (72hr growth rate) value of 12 mg/L. The No Oserved Effect Concentration at 72 hrs was 1.0 mg/L.
