Concerning sensitisation, one study in animals (Local Lymph Node Assay) performed according to current standards and under GLP conditions was available. The test substance had a positive result in LLNA test after topical application to the mouse ear. Positive results in cell proliferation and no clinical symptoms of systemic toxicity revealed that the test substance Anthraquinone could be a contact allergen but potential irritation effect does not rule out the possibility that it could be a false positive result.

Based on the positive results of LLNA, Anthraquinone is classified as skin sensitiser and the risk phrase R43 May cause sensitisation by skin contact is assigned to Anthraquinone according to DSD criteria; according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 criteria Anthraquinone is classified as skin sensitiser (Category 1) and hazard statement H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction is assigned.
