Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation:

Phillips Petroleum Co. (1980) reported a skin corrosivity and primary skin irritation test in rabbits. The unchanged test substance was applied under occlusive conditions for 4 hours. No mortalities and no corrosion were found. One rabbit exhibited lacrimation on day 2. Conclusion of the authors: irritating.

BASF (1964) found corrosive properties for rabbits when tested undiluted 2-mercaptoethanol for 20 hours under occlusive conditions. Since testing does not fulfill today's standard, this study cannot be used for classification.

Classification proposal concerning skin irritation: Xi; R38. under DSD. Category 2 (H315) under GHS/CLP.

Eye irritation:

Phillips Petroleum Co. (1980) found corrosive properties in a Draize test, when tested the undiluted test substance for 24 hours using rabbits. In this study, the test substance was not washed off. In another rabbit study (Phillips Petroleum Co., 1980), the test substance was rinsed. Here, the authors found irritating effects (undiluted test substance, exposure time: 24 hours).

Sugai et al. (1990) reported corrosive properties when tested the undiluted test substance for 24 hours. Rabbits were used, the test substance was not rinsed.

BASF (1964) found corrosive properties. Rabbits were given the undiluted test substance into the eyes for a 24-hour duration of treatment. Since testing does not require today's standard, this study cannot be used for classification.

Classification proposal regarding eye irritation: Xi; R41.

under DSD. Category 1 (H318) under GHS/CLP.
