Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lowest result is a 72 hour EC50 of 2.2mg/l and a 72 hour NOEC of 0.44mg/l , both for p-xylene.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Data is available on the ecotoxicity of each of the xylene isomers and ethylbenzene to algae. The studies by Galassiet al(1988) and Oldermsa (2004) followed OECD 201, whilst Hermanet al(1990) used a non-standard method. All studies included analytical confirmation of the exposure concentrations.

The EC50 results reported from these studies for the different isomers and ethylbenzene are very similar, with a range of 2.2 - 4.9 mg/l. The most conservative result was reported by Oldersmaet al(2004) for p-xylene. This was the only study that also reported NOEC values.
