A 96 hour acute semi-static toxicity study with the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) was performed to assess the toxicity of potassium permanganate. The study was performed according to GLP and the OECD 203 Test Guideline. The 96 hour LC50 was calculated to be 0.47 mg/L, with 95% confidence limits of 0.36 to 0.58 mg/L (based mean measured concentrations), the corresponding NOEC was 0.35 mg/L (Roupcova, 2006).

A 48 hour acute semi-static toxicity study with Daphnia magna was performed to assess the toxicity of potassium permanganate. The study was performed according to GLP and the OECD 202Test Guideline. The 48 hour EC50 was calculated to be 0.06 mg/L, with 95% confidence limits of 0.05 to 0.07 mg/L (based nominal exposure concentrations), the corresponding NOEC was 0.01 mg/L (Roupcova, 2006).

A 72 hour acute growth inhibition study with Scenedesmus subspicatus was performed to assess the toxicity of potassium permanganate. The study was performed according to GLP and the OECD 201 Test Guideline. The 72hour EbC50 was calculated to be 0.43 mg/L, with 95% confidence limits of 0.30 to 0.56 mg/L (based nominal exposure concentrations), the corresponding NOEC was 0.22 mg/L.  The 72hour ErC50 was calculated to be 0.80 mg/L, with 95% confidence limits of 0.69 to 0.91 mg/L (based nominal exposure concentrations), the corresponding NOEC was 0.32 mg/L (Roupcova, 2006).

A 3 hour microorganism toxicity study was performed to assess the respiration inhibition of potassium permanganate. The study was performed according to GLP and the EU Method C.11 Test Guideline. The 3 hour EC50 was calculated to be 164 mg/L, with 95% confidence limits of 131 to 220 mg/L (based nominal exposure concentrations) (Dolezalova, 2006).
