Description of key information

Readily biodegradable as shown in at least 4 studies. Results for 2 key studies:

- 76% (BOD) in 28 days, 10-day window met (OECD TG 301D)

- 91% (no nitrification) / 72% (with nitrification of N to NO3) in 28 days, 10-day window met (OECD TG 301D)

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

For GLDA-Na4 a series of biodegradation studies is reported, showing that:

- in 4 studies scored with reliability 1, GLDA-Na4 was shown to be readily biodegradable;

- in 3 more studies GLDA-Na4 was readily biodegradable, but the study received reliability score 3 (unreliable) due to the high endogenous respiration of the inoculum or uncertainty about the purity of the test substance;

- in 2 more studies GLDA-Na4 did not reach the thresholds for ready biodegradation, but the studies received reliability score 3 due to poor performance of the inoculum;

 

Conflicting results in ready biodegradability tests are always treated by only considering positive results when the quality of the test is well documented. In conclusion it has been repeatedly shown that GLDA is readily biodegradable. 

GLDA-Na4 did degrade under the anaerobic conditions prevailing in the study according to OECD TG 311 and is therefore anaerobically biodegradable.
